This street style snap, taken from The Sartorialist this week, got me thinking about bleached hair as part of an aesthetic.
The look works so well on certain people, whether they are naturally fair, or naturally dark. That particular ice-white shade is at once canvas and clincher: it functions as the perfect, otherworldly accent to an edgy outfit.
The inimitable Kate Lanphear does it best, I think. Her lily-white crop is at times tough, and at others, sci-fi-sleek. In a way, a shock of bright, white hair has the same effect that a scarlet lip has – arresting, memorable, symbolic. Red lips are lust, love, greed, power, seduction, blood. White hair is angelic, alien, anime, ancient and brand, brand new.
