Girl Friday: Marina Diamandis

Today’s Girl Friday is Marina Lambrini Diamandis, aka Marina and the Diamonds! A Welsh singer-songwriter of Greek descent, she rose to fame after reaching number two on the BBC Sound of 2010 poll and subsequently released her debut album, The Family Jewels, earlier this year.  I like her style and I like her curves.

Her music is bright, New Wave-influenced, keyboard-driven pop, inspired by everyone from Patti Smith and PJ Harvey to Madonna and Britney, and she says: “I probably have a bit of a different sound because I don’t really know what I’m doing”.

Compared to both Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine and Kate Bush, Marina is also well known for her playful, individualistic style. She calls it “vintage, cheerleader, cartoon” influenced and cites Gwen Stefani and Leigh Lezark among her style icons.

Marina is often spotted wearing Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, a French designer of Moroccan origins, famous for his playful, outlandish and irreverent designs. Think Disney Mickey Mouse Club meets Diana Ross and the Supremes doo-wop girl, meets early 80’s disco.

She’s also the latest addition to Vogue’s Today I’m Wearing blog, which already features names as illustrious as Alexa Chung, Daisy Lowe, Olivia Palermo and Julia Restoin Roitfeld. She’s on Day 4 today – Check it out.

For some reason my media uploader aint working, but watch the acoustic version of Marina’s Hollywood I love the floral shoulders of her top, especially the little bumblebee addition.

These are some images of de Castelbajac’s latest collection, Uber Tropikal Airlines. Love the wildlife!
