Today’s Girl Friday is Mila Kunis, the original That 70s Show minx, voice of Meg from Family Guy and most recently, the dark antagonist to Natalie Portman’s pale-skinned pretty in The Black Swan.
Mila grew up acting in commercials and classic American shows like Days of our Lives and Seventh Heaven. Her dark-eyed, sultry look was recognised early on, and she was a child model for Guess, among others.
It was her role as the feisty Jackie, Ashton Kutcher’s brunette bombshell in That 70’s Show that really got her noticed, after which she starred in a string of forgettable straight-to-TV movies. In 2008, her role in comedy hit Forgetting Sarah Marshall put her back on the map, with this year’s role as Lily in The Black Swan sure to catapult her into a whole new range of film roles.
She has already earned three awards for her performance, including a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild award and an award for Best Young Actor or Actress at the 67th Venice International Film Festival. She shed more than 10kg and spent four hours a day, seven days a week doing a ballet training to read herself for the role. Look out for her later this year in comedy Friends with Benefits with ex boy band crooner Justin Timberlake.
Mila’s redcarpet style is feminine and flattering, and often floaty. Sometimes she spices it up with a slightly riskier hemline, and a touch of something more modern, like leather. I think her graduation to bigger, better movies only bodes well for her style revolution, evidence of which is the elegant cream Elie Saab gown she wore to the premiere of The Black Swan.
She’s also been in music videos for The Strokes, Kiss and Aerosmith and is a self-confessed World of Warcraft fan and ‘computer geek’. One of the lesser known things about Mila is that she dated Home Alone actor Macaulay Culkin from 2002 until 2011. Strange but true.
I have yet to see The Black Swan and have heard mixed reviews, but I look forward to witnessing Lily and all her bewitching darkness.
